Okay, so I am going to flex my Englician talents here to point something over looked about twitter. I am going to Englitically analyze a tweet...

So here is how we roll...normally a bird tweets right. As that is, a tweet is a noun with no action so a bird in the future will tweeting and in the past tweeted. However with the induction of Twitter, a tweet now becomes an action noun. Why is this important, an action changes vowels when it changes tenses ...i.e. ran, run, swim, swam, swum..."I" typically indicates a future tense so a tweet in the future is a twit.

It becomes interesting when you look at the past tense. "A" and "U" typically are indicative of past tense. Now I am going to say that a twut makes no sense so that means the past tense of a tweet is a twat.

Clearly twitter did not think it through to much when they decided to name a notice a tweet...
